A suspected unexploded World War Two bomb found in the River Thames has been recovered for safe disposal. The operation by the Royal Navy and Metropolitan Police forced Waterloo Bridge, Westminster Bridge and Victoria Embankment in central London to shut. Westminster Police said the device was “being towed for safe disposal/removal elsewhere” as they reopened the riverfront at about 03:00 GMT. Police were called to the river at 17:15 GMT on Thursday. The search for a company to take on the £2.75bn contract to build high speed trains for the HS2 rail network got underway on Friday. The Department for Transport said up to 60 trains, capable of speeds of about 225mph, were needed. The contract, which will also involve maintaining the fleet, will be awarded in 2019. The trains are for the first phase of the project, due to open in 2026 and run between London and Birmingham. Mobile operator EE has been fined £2.7m by the telecoms regulator, Ofcom, for overcharging tens of thousands of customers. The watchdog found that the UK’s biggest mobile network broke a billing rule on two occasions. Users who called its 150 customer services number while roaming within the EU were incorrectly charged as if they had called the US. That meant customers were charged £1.20 a minute, rather than 19p.
