The Queen is expected to give Royal Assent to the Brexit bill in the next few hours, paving the way for Theresa May to trigger Article 50. Officially known as the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill, it passed the Parliamentary process following votes in the Commons and Lords on Monday. When it becomes law, the Prime Minister is free to decide when to invoke the two-year negotiation period for Britain to leave the EU. Downing Street has suggested this is not likely until the last week of March. Royal Assent nowadays is generally declared to both Houses by their…

The Armenia international had spent another spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, but started the game in Russia which went ahead despite concerns from Manchester United about the state of the pitch. Mkhitaryan opened the scoring in the 35th minute after a cutback from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but United were pegged back by their hosts eight minutes after the break as Aleksandr Bukharov’s effort beat Sergio Romero. Chances were mostly at a premium…

The supermarket chain said the issue affected both current and former colleagues, with the majority due up to £40 each and some receiving more. Tesco said the mistake, spotted during an internal review, would cost it £9.7m to rectify. Its statement said: “The review, which was conducted during the implementation of a new payroll system, found the voluntary contributions made by some colleagues to benefits such as pensions, childcare vouchers and cycle to work schemes, led to errors that…
Philip Hammond has defended a controversial rise in National Insurance for the self-employed as a “right and fair” move that will help the Government steer Britain through an uncertain future. The Chancellor is facing a growing political row over the hike in National Insurance contributions for high-earning self-employed workers announced in his first Budget. Speaking to Sky News, Mr Hammond said the move would make the system fairer considering that employees and self-employed workers have access to similar benefits from the state. “It’s only right and fair we should take a small step to closing the gap between the treatment…
Centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron would beat far-right leader Marine Le Pen in the first round of France’s presidential election and go on to win a runoff vote, according to a new poll. Chelsea moved 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table after a 2-1 win at West Ham on Monday Night Football. A flowing counter-attack was expertly finished by Eden Hazard on 25 minutes at the London Stadium and the visitors doubled the score when Diego Costa capitalised on poor West Ham defending to turn home Cesc Fabregas’ corner. A stoppage-time strike by Manuel Lanzini reduced the deficit but it came too late for the Hammers to stage a comeback as Chelsea held on to extend their lead atop the table. Antonio Conte’s side are now 10 points…
The Trump administration has rolled out a revised edition of a controversial immigration executive order. The new order which goes into effect on 16 March, temporarily suspends immigration into the United States from now only six predominantly-Muslim countries. Citizens from Libya, Syria, Yemen, Iran, Somalia and Sudan will be subjected to a 90-day ban on travel to the United States. It comes…
