British Airways cabin crew are set to strike for four days as part of a pay dispute. Unite members will walk out from 16 June after union leaders and BA management failed to reach a breakthrough in the deadlocked row. There have already been several days of industrial action over the pay of staff in the so-called mixed fleet, which joined the airline in recent years. An offer aimed at ending the dispute was rejected last week. Unite said the planned walkout was prompted by BA’s “persistent refusal to restore the travel concessions that airline management had withdrawn from those…
Business chiefs have joined world leaders in condemning Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate change deal as experts warned it could backfire on the US economy. The bosses of some of America’s biggest corporations from Goldman Sachs to Apple signalled their dismay over the move as it was claimed rival nations would now lead the shift to clean energy. Mr Trump – who has previously called climate change a hoax – said the accord undermined the US economy and cost jobs, claiming that other countries were “laughing at us”. The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE),…
Blistering questions from a studio audience put Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn under pressure on their weak spots of social care and defence. In the final TV event of the campaign featuring the leaders of the two major parties, the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition faced a 45-minute barrage from members of the public. Mrs May was taken to task by four members of the audience about her social care policies; and by an emotional voter who had waited 18 months to access treatment for mental health problems. Mr Corbyn, a long-standing advocate of nuclear disarmament, struggled and…
Manchester City have confirmed defender Gael Clichy will leave the club when his contract expires this summer. Sky Sports News HQ reported Clichy’s impending departure on Monday, and City have now announced the player will indeed exit when his current deal runs out on June 30. Clichy has made more than 200 appearances for Manchester City since joining from Arsenal in 2011 and was part of the Premier League-winning side of 2012, the club’s first league title in 44 years. “It’s been a special six years for me at City,” Clichy told City’s official website. “To win four major trophies…
The UK economy grew by just 0.2% in the first quarter of 2017, lower than an initial estimate of 0.3%, revised official figures show. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the dominant services sector – which represents more than three quarters of output – had been weaker than anticipated. It follows growth of 0.7% in the fourth quarter of 2016 and means that the UK’s growth slowdown – partly driven by rising inflation – is worse than first thought. The ONS pointed to declines for consumer-facing industries such as retail and hotels and a slowdown in household spending, as…
Donald Trump’s son-in- law is under investigation over the “extent and nature” of his dealings with Russian officials, US media is reporting. Jared Kushner is being scrutinised by the FBI as part of the investigation into possible ties between the President’s election campaign and Russia. The Washington Post says the investigation centres around meetings Mr Kushner had with the Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak and Moscow banker Sergei Gorkov. Mr Gorkov is the chairman of VneshEconomBank – a state bank which has been under US sanctions since 2014. In a statement provided to Sky News, Mr Kushner’s attorney Jamie Gorelick said:…

The National Health Service will continue to face huge pressure irrespective of who wins the General Election because no party has promised enough money to keep up with rising demand, according to a leading health think-tank. NHS funding was at the heart of manifesto promises from all the main parties last week, with the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats all pledging to increase spending. Analysis of the manifesto pledges by the Nuffield Trust, however, has found that all three fell short of even the most modest forecasts of spending required to keep pace with rising demand of 3-4% per…
Labour has sweetened its plans to abolish tuition fees as it urges students to register as voters before tonight’s deadline. Under the policy, students who begin their degrees this September would have their fees written off if the party wins the election. Meanwhile, those who are part-way through their studies would pay no further fees for the rest of their course. Labour estimates the policy could benefit about 400,000 students. Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner said: “If students sitting their A-levels now want a say on their future, they need to register to vote before tonight’s deadline and vote Labour…
It wasn’t barnstorming. It wasn’t political poetry and it was delivered with unrecognisable deliberation. But Donald Trump navigated himself out of a minefield of his own making, getting to a destination that his mainly Sunni Muslim audience of leaders could applaud. So far outside his comfort zone the US President clung to his script, a map through the sensitive landscape of Middle Eastern sensibilities where extravagant hospitality can be quickly matched with an explosive propensity to take offence. But he did it. Addressing some 50 leaders from the Islamic world he shook off the mantle of Islamophobia that had delighted…
