A crucial Brexit bill has passed its latest stage in Parliament, but Tory MPs have threatened to stage a rebellion next month. MPs debated the EU Withdrawal Bill until past midnight into Tuesday morning and it was eventually passed, at its second reading, by 36 votes. Theresa May has said the attempt to transpose thousands of EU laws and regulations into British law is vital to avoid a legal “cliff edge” when the UK leaves the EU in March 2019. Jeremy Corbyn had ordered his MPs to vote against the bill, saying the fact that ministers would be able to…
Boris Johnson is travelling to the Caribbean to visit British Overseas Territories battered by Irma, amid criticism that the Government’s response to the devastating hurricane was slow. The Foreign Secretary will spend “the coming days” in the region to see the UK’s relief effort first-hand, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said. He is expected to visit the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla, two of the worst hit territories. French President Emmanuel Macron is also visiting the region, and is expected to in St Martin later today, coinciding with a French military ship carrying supplies. Critics said the British Government did…
Donald Trump has led tributes to the 9/11 victims on the 16th anniversary of the terror attacks, saying the US grieves for the people “murdered by terrorists” in 2001. Moments of silence were held for the almost 3,000 people killed when hijackers crashed planes into the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania. Bells first tolled at 8:46am – the time the first aircraft was smashed into the north tower by al Qaeda extremists. They also rang out to mark other significant timings during that destructive day in 2001, including the moment the south tower collapsed in…
Arms manufacturers will gather in London this week to grease palms and prepare sales of controversial defence and security equipment. More than 1,600 exhibitors from 54 countries are attending the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) at ExCeL. Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon and Liam Fox, Secretary of State for International Trade, will speak at the event alongside the chiefs of staff of the UK’s armed forces. In 2015/16, the Ministry of Defence spent nearly £19bn, accounting for over 40% of all UK government procurement spend and representing the fifth largest defence budget in the world. Among the controversial companies…
North Korea has been hit by a new set of United Nations sanctions following the country’s latest nuclear test on 3 September. The sanctions target gas and oil imports and ban textile exports from the secretive state, as well as limiting the number of foreign workers it can send abroad. The resolution imposes a ban on condensates and natural gas liquids, a cap of two million barrels a year on refined petroleum products, and a cap on crude oil exports to North Korea at current levels. China supplies most of North Korea’s crude. But consensus has come at a cost.…
“There’s an outpouring; there’s rain,” the BLW President says, declaring it spring time! The moment that multitudes around the world await at each Global Communion Service in the BLW Nation, came a short while ago as the man of God, Reverend (Dr.) Chris Oyakhilome, declared in the power of the Holy Spirit that it is spring time in the realm of the Spirit! Before proclaiming such propelling and prophetic words over the congregation, Pastor Chris issued three special instructions for the brethren to abide by. “Receive God’s Word as seed from the seed store; plant it,” the man of God…
Boots issued a legal warning to a pregnancy charity over its public campaign for more affordable emergency contraception, it has emerged. The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) revealed the high street chain accused it of encouraging “personal abuse” and “harassment” of top Boots executives. In a formal complaint issued on 1 August through law firm Schillings – often employed by celebrities – Boots alleged that BPAS helped cause “immense personal distress” to senior executives. It followed a row over Boots’ pricing of the morning-after pill, with the company apologising in July for its “poor choice of words” after it initially resisted…
The border wall between the US and its southern neighbour is a step closer after four companies were awarded contracts to build prototypes. One of the central promises of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign was to build a wall between his country and Mexico, vowing it would stop illegal immigration. The companies chosen will build reinforced concrete models up to 30ft (9m) high and about 30ft wide, which will be tested in San Diego. Among the requirements for the prototypes is an “anti climb” feature. The four companies are Caddell Construction Co of Montgomery, Alabama; Fisher Sand & Gravel Co of…
The EU chief Brexit negotiator has said there has been no “decisive progress” on key issues in talks with the UK, criticising the UK for demanding the “impossible”. Michel Barnier said the two sides are still “quite far” away from being in a position to begin talks on future trade arrangements – which the UK is hoping to begin next month. Mr Barnier was speaking alongside Brexit Secretary David Davis after a third round of talks in Brussels over Britain’s departure from the EU. He said there had been some fruitful discussions but struck a critical, pessimistic tone – at…
The Government’s bold offer of 30 hours a week free childcare has been described as “chaos” on the day it comes into force in England. The Pre-school Learning Alliance, which has 14,000 members, says a funding shortfall means nurseries across England are struggling make it work. Chief Executive Neil Leitch told Sky News: “The government’s total refusal to tackle, or even acknowledge, the fundamental problem of early years under funding has left providers across the country struggling to find ways of delivering the offer that won’t force them out of business.” “Every week we’re hearing of more and more childcare…
