Drivers should be punished even if they only exceed the speed limit by 1mph, the policing chief for Britain’s roads has reportedly said. Currently, guidance says police forces should only issue penalties when motorists are 10% over a speed limit plus 2mph – for example, 35mph in a 30mph zone. But chief constable Anthony Bangham, the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead on road policing, is said to have called for an end to the 10% “buffer”. Mr Bangham said speeding awareness courses were being used too widely instead of penalty points and fines. The West Mercia chief made the comments…

Some BBC managers have issued “veiled threats” against women at the BBC who have raised the subject of equal pay. A report by 170 BBC women submitted to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee claims there is “still a bunker mentality” regarding transparency of pay between its male and female staff. Volkswagen has ordered an immediate inquiry into allegations German carmakers funded scientific tests in which monkeys and humans were exposed to diesel fumes. The New York Times reported on Friday that research aimed at defending the fuel’s impact on the environment was carried out at a lab in the US in 2014. The paper claimed it was led by the now defunct European Research Group on Environment and Health in the Transport Sector, also known as EUGT, a body that was solely funded by VW, Daimler and BMW. All three companies have reacted with horror to the testing revelations. Daimler,…

The UK’s pilots union has been given official recognition status by Ryanair for the first time in the airline’s 32-year history. The British Airline Pilots’ Association (Balpa) said it had signed a “historic” voluntary trade union recognition agreement after the no-frills carrier signalled last month that it was willing to talk to pilot unions across Europe amid a string of disputes. Ryanair was seen as wanting to limit disruption following a damaging blunder over rotas which led to its decision in the autumn to cancel flights affecting almost 700,000 customers. The climbdown over its 32-year refusal to recognise unions led…

Theresa May is facing fresh turmoil among her own MPs and Cabinet ministers as divisions deepen in the Government over Brexit. She faces the embarrassment of a secret study on the impact of Britain leaving the European Union being leaked. It had been meant only for ministers. JERUSALEM, Israel – This past week, just a few short weeks after the White House announced the US would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, President Trump sent Vice President Mike Pence to the Middle East with a mission: to stand with Israel and to reassure Arab alies that the US has a vision for peace. In the eyes of many, especially in Israel, he did both, with grace and confidence. Late last year, CBN’s David Brody sat down with the vice president and asked him about his upcoming trip. He responded, “If the world knows nothing else, the world should…

The UK economy grew by a better than expected 0.5% in the fourth quarter of 2017 but remains “slower and uneven”, official figures show. Britain’s performance in the October-December period was an improvement on the 0.4% rate seen in the previous quarter but still meant that for the year as a whole, growth was at its weakest since 2012. The pound, which in recent days has been trading at its highest levels since the Brexit vote, lifted by a cent to just under $1.43 in the wake of the figures. Gross domestic product (GDP) rose by 1.8% in 2017, below…
