NatWest has granted itself “sweeping new powers” to limit cash deposits and withdrawals, fuelling warnings that banks are forcing customers towards a “cashless society”. Two professors and a student are suing the University of Lethbridge (UofL) for violating their right to freedom of expression and assembly by cancelling a talk by one of the professors on the topic of the perceived threat of “wokeism” to academic freedom. The lawsuit, filed on July 26, was launched by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) on behalf of former Mount Royal University associate professor Frances Widdowson, UofL professor Paul Viminitz, and UofL student Jonah Pickle. Chelsea have agreed a deal in principle to sign the Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sánchez for a fee worth up to £25m. All public elementary, secondary, and postsecondary schools in Louisiana are now required to feature “In God We Trust” in all classrooms. It’s the official motto of the United States since 1956. It comes as a new law, signed by Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, went into effect on Tuesday. The legislation, H.B. 8 (pdf), requires the national motto to be shown “on a poster or framed document that is at least 11 inches by 14 inches” in each classroom. The Bank of England is poised to push interest rates to 5.25% on Thursday as it tries to bring down inflation with a 14th consecutive increase in the cost of borrowing. Amid government concerns that cost of living pressures are proving persistent, the Bank is likely to push rates up by 0.25 percentage points to a fresh 15-year high.
