Vodafone has denied a report saying issues found in equipment supplied to it by Huawei in Italy in 2011 and 2012 could have allowed unauthorised access to its fixed-line network there. A Bloomberg report said that Vodafone spotted security flaws in software that could have given Huawei unauthorised access to Italian homes and businesses. The US refuses to use Huawei equipment for security reasons. This is despite the US wanting the UK and its other allies in the “Five Eyes” intelligence grouping – Canada, Australia and New Zealand – to exclude the company. Australia and New Zealand have already blocked…
New Zealand police responded to an incident, arresting a man in Christchurch on Tuesday following reports of a possible bomb threat in the city, where 50 people were killed in attacks by a lone gunman on two mosques in March. Police cordoned off streets in the Phillipstown area of the city on New Zealand’s South Island, with a bomb disposal team, ambulance and fire and emergency crews sent to the scene, according to a police statement. “A 33-year-old man has been arrested and is currently speaking to police in regards to the incident,” the statement said and added that a…
U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer left their hotel shortly after arrival earlier on Tuesday. Mnuchin said earlier that he hoped to make “substantial progress” with Chinese negotiators in the next two rounds of trade talks, as the world’s two largest economies look for ways to end their bruising trade war. U.S. President Donald Trump said on April 4 that the two sides could have a deal worked out in about four weeks. Last week, he said he would soon host Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House – a meeting seen as needed…
A mistake by goalkeeper David de Gea gifted Chelsea an equaliser as Manchester United’s hopes of playing in next season’s Champions League faded at Old Trafford. With United leading through Juan Mata’s goal against his former club, De Gea spilled Antonio Rudiger’s 30-yard attempt for Marcos Alonso to level shortly before the interval. Up until Chelsea’s equaliser, United had been in control yet they remain sixth in the table, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with two games to play, after a third successive league game without a win. In a competitive game, both teams suffered injuries. After Rudiger was forced…
Dutch duo Virgil van Dijk and Vivianne Miedema won the top honours at the PFA player of the year awards on Sunday (April 28). Liverpool defender Van Dijk was the first defender to win the men’s PFA player of the year award since John Terry in 2005, while Arsenal’s Miedema took the prize after a stunning title-winning season where she averaged more than a goal per game. Van Dijk beat off tough competition from the likes of Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard, Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and teammate Sadio Mane. Miedema also finished ahead of a trio of Manchester City finalists…
North Korea’s state-run television KRT on Sunday (April 28) aired a video footage of leader Kim Jong Un returning home by private train after visiting Russia. In the video, Kim was greeted by high-ranking officials along with honour guards and residents upon his arrival to a train station in North Korea on Saturday (April 27). The state media did not specify which train station it was. During his first Russia visit, Kim told Russian President Vladimir Putin that peace and security on the Korean peninsula depended on the United States, warning that a state of hostility could easily return, KRT…
The outcome of talks between British Prime Minister Theresa May’s government and the opposition Labour Party to break the deadlock over Britain’s exit from the European Union could be known in the coming week, the European Union’s chief negotiator said on Sunday (April 28). A business spokeswoman for the Labour party said earlier on Sunday that the talks have been productive, but the government needed to move on its red lines. Barnier said the discussions between the Labour Party and the British government do not call into question the 600-page withdrawal deal that was negotiated between the bloc and the…
Fewer British holidaymakers have booked a summer holiday inside the European Union this year amid continuing Brexit uncertainty, Thomas Cook has said. The travel firm says almost half (48%) of the holidays it sold up until the end of February were to non-EU destinations, up 10% on last year. Despite this, the firm says Spain is still its most popular destination. Its findings chime with separate Post Office figures showing currency sales for long-haul destinations have jumped. Sales of the Japanese yen were up 12% so far this year compared with last, while sales of the Indonesian rupiah have increased…
The Duke of Cambridge, Britain’s Prince William, visited Christchurch’s al Noor mosque where over 40 people were killed on March 15 when a lone gunman opened fire on worshippers. The prince spoke to survivors of his own grief, pain and loss and told of his shock when hearing the news of the attack, adding that he stood by New Zealand and Christchurch. The suspected white supremacist from Australia has been charged with 50 counts of murder over the shootings on March 15 and will next appear in court in June.
Britain’s top civil servant has demanded ministers cooperate with his inquiry into the leaking of discussions at the National Security Council. Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark, who is also the National Security Adviser, is leading the internal inquiry. He has written to ministers on the council and their special advisers after the Daily Telegraph reported details of a meeting about Chinese telecoms firm Huawei. It comes amid mounting pressure for a more robust response to the leak and several cabinet ministers have already denied they were involved. There has been a backlash against the leak, with Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright saying…
