Protesters in Catalonia blocked roads morning as a general strike kicked-off in the region following four days of violent protests over a supreme court ruling on Monday that convicted nine Catalan separatist leaders over their 2017 role in a failed independence drive. In Barcelona, dozens of people sat on Diagonal Avenue, one of the Catalan capital’s main streets, holding separatist flags and chanting slogans. Since the court decision, the divided region has experienced the worst sustained street violence in Spain in decades. The general strike coincides with the arrival in Barcelona of thousands of peaceful protesters who set off from…
U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at a campaign rally at Democratic opponents like “crazy Nancy” Pelosi, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, for pushing an impeachment inquiry. Pelosi accused Trump of having a “meltdown” after walking out of a White House meeting on Wednesday where she and other Democratic leaders complained about his decision to pull U.S. troops from northeastern Syria and allow Turkey to attack America’s Kurdish allies in the area. Trump has faced a backlash from his own Republican allies in Congress for the Syria pullout but he said on Thursday a ceasefire negotiated by Vice…
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that Britain and the European Union had agreed a “great” new Brexit deal and urged lawmakers to approve it at the weekend. “We’ve got a great new deal that takes back control,” Johnson said in a tweet. “Now parliament should get Brexit done on Saturday so we can move on to other priorities like the cost of living, the NHS, violent crime and our environment.” European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker tweeted that the deal was “fair” and “balanced”. “I recommend that EUCO endorses this deal,” he said. So now the PM’s Attention moves to Parliament…
Climate change activists disrupted rail services in the east of London early, sparking a physical confrontation between angry commuters and a protester who had climbed onto the roof of a London Underground train, video on social media showed. British Transport Police said they had responded to incidents at Shadwell, Stratford and Canning Town, near to London’s Canary Wharf financial district. Footage showed protesters unfurling an Extinction Rebellion protest group banner on top of a stationary London Underground train at Canning Town before one was pelted with food and physically dragged off by commuters. “Arrests have already been made and officers…
Border communities gathered on the border between the Irish town of Lifford and the Northern Irish town of Strabane during the night in protest against UK’s departure from the EU. Holding flames and placards, residents on both sides of the border staged a candlelight vigil on a bridge connecting Ireland to Northern Ireland. After another day of technical talks in Brussels, EU officials said an agreement had been reached on customs arrangements for Northern Ireland, ‘level playing field’ provisions on labour and environment standards. But residents living on both sides of the border said they remained concerned that a hardening…
Queen Elizabeth attended a service at London’s Westminster Abbey to mark 750 years since King Edward the Confessor’s original church on the site was rebuilt during the reign of Henry III and consecrated in 1269. The 93-year-old monarch was accompanied by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. The Anglo-Saxon Abbey, one of Britain’s oldest and biggest tourist attractions, was where Elizabeth was crowned in 1953, where her grandson Prince William and his wife Kate were married in 2011 and where 17 British monarchs are buried. It was originally consecrated in 1065 and mostly demolished by Henry III to build the present Gothic…
The mother of a teenager killed in a car crash involving a U.S. diplomat’s wife on Tuesday (October 15) said U.S. President Donald Trump held her hand and felt “sincere.” Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn spoke to reporters after a White House visit with Trump intended to put pressure on to have American Anne Sacoolas to be sent back to face British investigators. Harry Dunn, 19, died after a car driven by Sacoolas crashed into his motorbike near RAF Croughton, an air force base in Northamptonshire in central England used by the U.S. military. Harry Dunn’s parents have also rejected…
Boris Johnson will write a letter to the EU asking for a delay to Brexit beyond 31 October if he fails to get an exit deal approved by parliament by Saturday, the Brexit secretary has confirmed. Stephen Barclay told a committee of MPs on Wednesday that the prime minister will “comply” with legislation, aimed at blocking a no-deal Brexit at the end of the month, passed by opposition MPs last month. This law compels Mr Johnson to ask for a three-month extension to the Article 50 negotiating period, to 31 January 2020, if MPs have not approved a Brexit deal…
Fukushima residents on Tuesday took stock of the damage left in the wake of Hagibis as the death toll of the worst typhoon to hit Japan for decades climbed to 66. The highest death toll was in Fukushima prefecture, north of Tokyo, where levees burst in at least 14 places along the Abukuma River, which meanders through a number of cities in the largely agricultural prefecture. At least 25 people died in Fukushima, including a mother and child who were caught in flood waters, NHK said. Another child of the woman remains missing. About 133,000 households were without water while…
