An adviser to the European Court of Justice said, a jailed Catalan separatist leader elected to the European Parliament while in detention had the right to ask lawmakers to decide whether to uphold his immunity. The advice from Advocate General Maciej Szpunar is a boost for the Catalan separatist movement and Oriol Junqueras, who was voted into the European Parliament in May despite being detained in Spain since 2017 after an illegal independence referendum. Junqueras, the Catalan government’s former deputy leader, was sentenced to 13 years in prison in October. Szpunar said Junqueras’s conviction had brought to an end his…
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that she expected Britain’s parliament to approve British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s divorce deal with the European Union. The United Kingdom voted by 52%-48% in 2016 to quit the EU, albeit without deciding how it would be done. Parliament, however, has been deadlocked since a 2017 snap election over how, when and even whether to leave. Johnson, who had promised to deliver Brexit on Oct. 31 “do or die”, demanded a Dec. 12 election after parliament – where he has no majority – frustrated his attempts to ratify the last-minute Withdrawal deal he struck with…
German champions Bayern Munich have parted company with coach Niko Kovac, a day after a 5-1 thrashing away to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, the club said on Sunday (November 3). A statement from Bayern said Kovac had gone after “mutual agreement” between him and the club, which dropped to fourth in the league after their heavy defeat. Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “The performance of our team in recent weeks and the results have shown us that there was a need for action. “I had an open and serious conversation with Niko on this basis on Sunday with the…
“This month, walk with the consciousness of divine blessings,” Pastor Chris urges global congregation. Joyous celebration met the declaration of November to be the ‘Month of Blessings’ by the man of God, Reverend (Dr.) Chris Oyakhilome, at the just concluded Global Communion Service. Reading from Genesis 14:18-20, the man of God, further expounded the Word for the month. He explained that the Christian is born into a realm of perpetual blessings as the seed of Abraham. When you come into…
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa joined in the celebrations in Yokohama after the Springboks defeated England 32-12 on Saturday (November 2) to win the World Cup for the third time. Wingers Makazole Mapimpi and Cheslin Kolbe crossed in the last 15 minutes for South Africa’s first-ever tries in a World Cup final but six penalties from the boot of Handre Pollard had already put the Springboks firmly in charge. South African captain Siya Kolisi lifted the Webb Ellis trophy to spark wild celebrations in the stadium and Ramaphosa, who earlier wore a dark suit, donned a Springboks jersey and held…
Baby goods retailer Mothercare has said it plans to call in administrators to the troubled firm’s UK business, putting 2,500 jobs at risk. Mothercare said its 79 UK stores were “not capable of returning to a level of structural profitability and returns that are sustainable for the group”. “Furthermore, the company is unable to continue to satisfy the ongoing cash needs of Mothercare UK,” it added. It said stores would continue to trade as normal for the time being. Also affected is Mothercare Business Services Limited (MBS), which provides certain services to Mothercare UK.
A fire swept through a Pakistani train killing at least 65 people, police said, after a gas canister passengers were using to cook breakfast exploded. The number of people reported dead has been rising as investigations continue. The fire destroyed three of the train’s carriages near the town of Rahim Yar Khan, in the south of the Punjab province. People sneaking stoves onto trains in order to prepare meals on long journeys is a common problem, said the Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. Pakistan’s colonial-era railway network has fallen into disrepair in recent decades due to chronic under-investment and…
Qantas Airways Ltd confirmed that they are inspecting 33 aircraft for structural cracks on Boeing Co’s 737 NGs, after discovering problems with planes that did not require urgent inspections. Qantas Fleet Safety Captain, Debbie Slade confirmed that the airline had found one crack in an aircraft component. The cracks are on what is known as the “pickle fork” – a part that attaches the plane’s fuselage, or body, to the wing structure. Boeing on October 11 said 38 planes worldwide had been grounded after urgent checks but has not provided a further update. The issue surfaced while the newer 737…

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has readmitted 10 of the 21 Conservative MPs he expelled from his parliamentary party last month, a spokesman for the governing party said on Tuesday. The spokesman said Johnson met the 10 in his office in Britain’s House of Commons. Among their number was former business minister Greg Clark and Nicholas Soames, grandson of British wartime leader Winston Churchill. Some of them have already said they will stand down at the next election. “The expectation of all (Conservative) MPs (members of parliament) and candidates standing for an election will be that when we come back we…
