The Democratic-led House of Representatives voted to send two formal charges against President Donald Trump to the Senate, clearing the way for only the third impeachment trial of a U.S. president to begin in earnest next week. Lawmakers voted 228 to 193 to give the Senate, controlled by Trump’s fellow Republicans, the task of putting him on trial on charges of abuse of power for asking Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden and of obstruction of Congress for blocking testimony and documents sought by Democratic lawmakers. The 100-seat Senate is expected to acquit Trump, keeping him in office, as…
Last year was the second-hottest year since records began, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said, adding that heat was likely to lead to more extreme weather events like the Australian bushfires in 2020 and beyond. The figures from the Geneva-based WMO crunches several datasets including from NASA and the UK Met Office. It showed that the average global temperature in 2019 was 1.1 degree Celsius (34 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels, creeping towards a globally agreed limit after which major changes to life on Earth are expected. Scientists, such as Omar Baddour, say climate change likely contributed to severe weather in…
Foreign Minister Dominic Raab said that Britain is willing to work with the United States and European partners to build a broader initiative that would address not just Iran’s nuclear ambitions but its destabilising activity in the region. Raab told parliament that the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) – commonly referred to as the Iran nuclear deal – remained the best available deal for restraining Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. In a step that will increase diplomatic pressure, Britain, France and Germany launched a dispute mechanism to challenge Iran for breaching limits on its nuclear programme under an agreement that Washington…
Britain’s Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made their first public outing together, following an announcement from Prince Harry and his wife Meghan that they would step back from senior roles in Britain’s royal family to spend more time in North America. Prince William and his wife Kate were greeted by cheering crowds at Bradford City Hall, where they are expected to meet with young people from across the community. Queen Elizabeth reluctantly agreed to her grandson and William’s younger brother, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan’s wish for a more independent future. People in Bradford supported the choice of the…
DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) – Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders disagreed in a Democratic presidential debate on Tuesday over whether he once told her a woman could not win the White House in 2020, underlining an emerging rift between the progressive contenders as the first voting nears. After days of tensions between the two U.S. senators, friends and liberal standard-bearers, who agreed early in the campaign not to attack each other, Sanders emphatically denied he ever made the remark, saying it was “incomprehensible” he could have said such a thing in a private 2018 meeting with her. Warren confirmed the…
Manchester United remain the top-ranked English club in terms of revenue generated but their 23-year dominance of Deloitte’s Football Money League could come under threat from Manchester City or Liverpool in next year’s table. United’s earnings of £627.1million for 2018-19 puts them third overall in the table, behind Spanish giants Barcelona (£741.1m) and Real Madrid (£667.5m). Their closest Premier League rivals are City and Liverpool in sixth and seventh respectively, with the Pep Guardiola’s side just £88.9m behind. United, who have been the highest-ranked English club since Deloitte first compiled the Money League survey based on the 1996-97 financial results,…
People are to be banned from using credit cards to place bets in an attempt to curb problem gambling, the Gambling Commission has said. The ban, which starts on 14 April 2020, comes after reviews of the industry by the commission and the government. A total of 24 million adults in Britain gamble, with 10.5 million of those doing so online. Separate commission research shows that 22% of online gamblers using credit cards are classed as problem gamblers. The ban will apply to all online and offline gambling products except lotteries that are run for good causes. These lotteries will…
Hong Kong courts are facing “unprecedented” challenges in processing the sheer number of protest-related arrests, the city’s leader Carrie Lam said at a news conference. Hong Kong’s Chief Justice announced the creation of a task force to deal with protest cases, which would introduce new measures such as possibly extending the courts’ sitting hours. Hong Kong has been rocked by months of large-scale protests and civil unrest. Demonstrators are angry at what they see to be Chinese meddling in Hong Kong’s promised freedoms when the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997. They also say they are responding…
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has given her blessing to grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan’s wish for a more independent future following crisis talks involving the most senior members of the royal family. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family,” the 93-year-old monarch said in a statement. “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.” She…
Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Northern Ireland to mark the restoration of the British province’s devolved executive after three years and to hold talks with Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar. Parties representing Irish nationalists and pro-British unionists ended a three-year standoff that had threatened a key part of the region’s 1998 peace settlement by forming a new power-sharing administration. Johnson met First Minister Arlene Foster of the pro-British Democratic Unionist Party and Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill of Irish nationalists Sinn Fein on arrival at the Stormont estate, seat of the Northern Ireland government. Varadkar and Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney…
