A fire swept through a Pakistani train killing at least 65 people, police said, after a gas canister passengers were using to cook breakfast exploded.  The number of people reported dead has been rising as investigations continue. The fire destroyed three of the train’s carriages near the town of Rahim Yar Khan, in the south of the Punjab province. People sneaking stoves onto trains in order to prepare meals on long journeys is a common problem, said the Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. Pakistan’s colonial-era railway network has fallen into disrepair in recent decades due to chronic under-investment and…

Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that he was asking parliament to approve a national election to take place on December 12 as part of his efforts to ensure Britain leaves the European Union. Johnson said in a letter to opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn that if the European Union offers Britain a Brexit delay to January 31 then he would seek to pass legislation to ratify his exit deal by November 6 and would make available “all possible time” to do so. This would mean Brexit could be completed before a December 12 election. If parliament, which earlier this…

French Europe Minister, Amelie de Montchalin, questioned whether an additional delay to the Brexit process was justified, after the British parliament rejected the government’s accelerated timetable to approve a deal negotiated with the European Union. Lawmakers in Westminster backed the withdrawal agreement itself but refused Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plan to speed up the process, designed in order to respect the current October 31 deadline, saying it did not allow for proper scrutiny of the legislation. On Saturday Johnson was forced by parliament to send a letter to the European Union requesting an extension. European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted…

The deputy leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, Nigel Dodds, asked British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to “sit down and talk” to the party after a defeat in parliament made ratification of his deal by the October 31 deadline almost impossible. In another day of Brexit drama in the 800-year-old Westminster parliament, lawmakers handed Johnson the first major parliamentary victory of his premiership by signalling their support for his withdrawal deal in an early legislative hurdle. But that was overshadowed just minutes later when parliament defeated him on his timetable to rush the legislation through the House of Commons in…

With just 10 days left until the United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union on Oct. 31, the split is again in disarray as Britain’s politicians argue over whether to leave with a deal, exit without a deal or hold another referendum. The government is trying to get the legislation needed for Britain to…

On Monday, the government will make a second attempt to hold the meaningful vote, presenting MPs with a straight choice to approve or oppose the deal in principle. Whether the Speaker, John Bercow, will allow that, though, is not yet clear – he could rule it out on the grounds it amounts to debating the same matter twice. No 10 said: “Letwin’s delay amendment turned Saturday into a meaningless vote and denied MPs and the public the chance to end the uncertainty.” It added: “Parliament needs a straight up-and-down vote on the deal – do MPs want to respect the…
