French riot police dispersed hundreds of Catalan pro-independence demonstrators, who had been blocking a major road link between Spain and France for nearly 24 hours. Police on the French side of the border at La Jonquera were seen pushing hundreds of protesters to the Spanish side and removing fences and barricades from their demonstration that had blocked the AP-7 highway in both directions. Australian authorities said late they had a long way to go to contain “enormous” bushfires that have raged across a vast area of the country’s east coast and shrouded Sydney in smoke. An adviser to the European Court of Justice said, a jailed Catalan separatist leader elected to the European Parliament while in detention had the right to ask lawmakers to decide whether to uphold his immunity. The advice from Advocate General Maciej Szpunar is a boost for the Catalan separatist movement and Oriol Junqueras, who was voted into the European Parliament in May despite being detained in Spain since 2017 after an illegal independence referendum. Baby goods retailer Mothercare has said it plans to call in administrators to the troubled firm’s UK business, putting 2,500 jobs at risk. Mothercare said its 79 UK stores were “not capable of returning to a level of structural profitability and returns that are sustainable for the group”. “Furthermore, the company is unable to continue to satisfy the ongoing cash needs of Mothercare UK,” it added. It said stores would continue to trade as normal for the time being. Also affected is Mothercare Business Services Limited (MBS), which provides certain services to Mothercare UK.
