Britain’s future relationship with the European Union was likely top of the agenda as Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz to Downing Street. Thirty-three-year-old Kurz – the world’s youngest head of government – traveled to London less than a month after Britain sealed its departure from the EU, but with negotiations on their future relationship set to start on Monday (March 2). A spokesperson for Johnson confirmed earlier on Tuesday that senior British ministers have come to an agreement on the government’s negotiating mandate for the talks. European Union member states likewise said they had adopted a…
British exports to the European Union could fall by as much as 14% if the two sides are unable to strike a free trade agreement and, even with one, could be 9% lower, the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), said. The imposition of tariffs under a no-deal scenario would crimp trade, with the effect amplified by so-called “non-tariff measures” (NTMs) such as quotas, licensing and regulatory measures protecting health, safety and the environment. NTMs would double the negative impact of tariffs and could lead to an overall $32 billion hit to British exports, according to the UN Conference…
Several European countries have announced their first coronavirus cases, with all appearing to be linked to the growing outbreak in Italy. Austria, Croatia and Switzerland said the cases involved people who had been to Italy, as did Algeria in Africa. The first positive virus test has been recorded in Latin America – a Brazilian resident just returned from Italy. Italy has in recent days become Europe’s worst-affected country, with more than 300 cases and 11 deaths. But its neighbours have decided closing borders would be “disproportionate”. Health ministers from France, Germany, Italy and the EU Commission committed to keeping frontiers…
Democratic presidential candidates accused each other of support for authoritarianism during their debate in South Carolina, with Michael Bloomberg taking heat for his comments on China’s Xi Jinping, and Bernie Sanders coming under fire for recent comments praising Cuba’s education system. Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg defended his stance on China, saying that President Xi has to answer to China’s Politburo, and arguing that the U.S. must engage with China. This drew a sharp response from former vice president Joe Biden, who said that Xi is an un-democratic ruler, but one who must be negotiated with. “This is a…

Clashes broke out on the Greek island of Lesbos early on Tuesday (February 25) between police and residents protesting the construction of a new migrant holding centre, witnesses and police said. Witnesses said about 500 residents then attempted to block access to the construction site. The new site on Lesbos will be a closed reception centre for newly arrived migrants and will replace the current open-access Moria camp, which is a sprawling facility built for less than 3,000 people that is now accommodating more than 19,000 asylum seekers. Greek authorities plan to construct closed detention facilities on Lesbos, Chios, Samos,…
Global financial markets saw some of the sharpest falls in years on Monday after a rise in coronavirus cases renewed fears about economic slowdown. In the US, the Dow Jones and S&P 500 posted their sharpest daily declines since 2018, with the Dow falling 3.5% or more than 1,000 points. The S&P 500 ended the day 3.3% lower, while the Nasdaq sank 3.7%. The UK’s FTSE 100 share index closed 3.3% lower, the sharpest drop since January 2016. In Italy, which has seen Europe’s worst outbreak of the virus, Milan’s stock market plunged nearly 6%. Japan’s Nikkei shed 3.7% for…
Britain will start reintroducing traditional blue passports next month, the interior ministry said on Saturday February 22, replacing the burgundy European Union documents that have been in use since 1988. Reverting to the dark blue of pre-EU days has been a point of pride for many Britons who voted to leave the bloc in a 2016 referendum – even though the new passport will be made by a Franco-Dutch firm. Britain formally left the EU at the end of January and the introduction of the new passport will be phased in from early March. From mid-2020, all new passports will…
Barry Pollack, a lawyer for Julian Assange said that the United States’ extradition request was motivated by politics and that the U.S. attitude to the WikiLeaks founder had changed when Donald Trump came to power. Almost a decade since his WikiLeaks website enraged Washington by leaking hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. documents, Assange, 48, is fighting extradition from Britain to the United States where he is accused of espionage and hacking. The United States asked Britain to extradite Assange last year after he was pulled from the Ecuador embassy in London, where he had spent seven years holed up…
Insiders note an “eerie” calm at Boeing Co’s (BA.N) 737 MAX factory, formerly a bustling hub that has helped fuel the aviation industry’s record growth over the last two decades. Weeks after halting production of the 737 MAX, which has been grounded for almost a year over fatal crashes, Boeing is seizing on the lull to conduct an overhaul at its Seattle-area factory to curb inefficiency, improve quality and ease the plane’s re-entry to the market, four people familiar with the matter said. Backed by engineers from roughly a dozen suppliers such as fuselage maker Spirit AeroSystems (SPR.N) and robot…
