ASTRAZENECA IN £80M COVID JAB COMPENSATION CLAIM Is how risk was calculated to blame Lawyers of 35 victims of the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine have demanded a huge £80m in compensation for the injuries sustained after taking the vaccine. The cases have been linked to the deaths of at least 81 people and caused serious harm to hundreds more. The claims allege the AstraZeneca vaccine is “defective”. The vaccine has been linked to a condition that causes blood clots called Vaccine-Induced Immune Thrombocytopenia and Thrombosis (VITT). In about one in five cases, patients who contracted VITT sadly died. 40 more claims…
FRENCH FARMERS UP PRESSURE ON GOVERNMENT AS PROTESTS SPREAD – 50% of cereals are exported outside France. Protesting farmers blocked roads across France and there was one fatal accident, as their unions urged the government to ease its drive for lower consumer prices and reduce environmental regulations. The protests, heading into a second week after spilling over from neighbouring countries, come as campaigning for European Union elections gathers pace. The unrest is the first major challenge for new Prime Minister Gabriel Attal. The government prides itself on its fight against inflation, pressuring the food sector to lower supermarket prices. But…
A halving of UK government borrowing over the past year has created scope for Jeremy Hunt to make tax cuts worth about £20bn in his March budget. Data from the Office for National Statistics showed that higher VAT and income tax receipts coupled with lower spending resulted in a deficit of £7.8bn in December 2023 – the lowest for the month since the pre-pandemic year of 2019. With lower debt interest payments also contributing to the improvement in the government’s financial position, analysts said the prospects for a giveaway package had brightened. The December deficit was more than £6bn lower than the £14bn pencilled…
Calls for Israel to allow more aid into Gaza and to accept a future Palestinian state as necessary for its own security are expected to dominate a meeting of the UN security council in New York on Tuesday. Before the meeting, the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, met his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, in New York to urge Israel to agree to a ceasefire and warn the US not to fuel the spread of the conflict. The meeting comes against a backdrop of a second US-UK coordinated raid against Houthi strongholds in Yemen, as well as intensified fighting in southern Gaza. Amir-Abdollahian said…
GHANA CONCEDE TWICE IN STOPPAGE TIME TO THROW AWAY LEAD – Ghana draw 2-2 with Mozambique Ghana conceded twice in stoppage time to throw away a two-goal lead to draw with Mozambique and almost certainly exit the Africa Cup of Nations. The Black Stars looked to be cruising into the last 16 thanks to two Jordan Ayew penalties, one in each half. But Geny Catamo pulled one back from the spot on 91 minutes before Reinildo Mandava’s header broke Ghana hearts. Mozambique finish bottom of Group B, while Ghana need a miracle to progress as one of four best third-placed…
NIGERIA BEAT GUINEA-BISSAU 1-0 TO ADVANCE TO AFCON KNOCKOUT STAGES – Opa Sangante own goal gives Super Eagles victory Nigeria are safely through to the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau, who exit the competition at the group stage. An own-goal by defender Opa Sangante, who lunged in to stop the ball from reaching an unmarked Victor Osimhen after 36 minutes, was enough to separate the two teams in a game that was far more evenly-matched that their respective rankings would have suggested. The Super Eagles had the best of…
ARGENTINE PRESIDENT SLAMS THE SOCIALISTS AT THE WEF Free enterprise capitalism is the only tool we have to end hunger and poverty he said The new Argentinian President Habier Milei praised free markets while slamming socialism and “social justice” economic models in a speech aimed at the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos that marks his first overseas tour. “Socialism is a phenomenon that creates poverty,” he said in a special address to the elites at the World Economic Forum, warning the West was “in danger” of its spread. “Free enterprise capitalism is the only tool we have to end…
DUTCH PARLIAMENT CONSIDERS FIRST STEP TOWARDS ASKING KING TO PAY INCOME TAX – This plan would require an amendment to the constitution Dutch lawmakers will vote on a first step towards requiring King Willem-Alexander and his family to pay income tax, a plan that would require an amendment to the constitution. The initial motion, expected to be put to the vote on Tuesday, requires a simple majority to pass. It asks the government to propose a constitutional change, which would then ultimately need backing from two-thirds of both houses of parliament. Such a proposal appeared to have sufficient support in…
The UK’s fruit and flower growers face an “existential threat” from new post-Brexit border checks that could damage business and affect next year’s crops, the country’s biggest farming body has said. The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) warned that changes to import rules in April, which will impose checks at the border for nearly all young plants coming into the country, could cause long delays and result in plants being damaged or destroyed. Martin Emmett, the NFU’s chair of the horticulture and potatoes board, said: “There is a concern that border control points can pose an existential threat to horticultural businesses…
