Brexit trade talks plunged into crisis on Monday after Britain warned the European Union that it could effectively override the divorce deal it signed unless the bloc agrees to a free trade deal by Oct. 15. In one of the most startling turns of the four-year Brexit saga, Britain is reportedly planning new legislation that will override key parts of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement – a step that, if implemented, could jeopardise a treaty signed in January and stoke tension in Northern Ireland. Sections of the internal market bill, due to be published on Wednesday, are expected to “eliminate the…

Associated British Foods (ABF.L) said on Monday it expects full-year profit at its Primark fashion chain to be at least at the top end of its previously guided range after trading in its latest quarter exceeded expectations. Adjusted earnings per share for the group as a whole for the year to Sept. 12 were forecast to be “significantly below” last year, however, mainly as a result of the decline in Primark’s profit due to lockdowns across Europe. In July the group forecast full year adjusted operating profit for Primark in a range of 300 million-350 million pounds ($396 million-$462 million),…

Spain scored a stoppage-time equaliser through Jose Luis Gaya to rescue a 1-1 draw away to Germany on Thursday in their Nations League opener and first international in almost 10 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Local-born Timo Werner struck six minutes after halftime, threading a low shot between two defenders to beat goalkeeper David De Gea in an empty Stuttgart arena. Spain had looked set to fail to score for the first time after 40 consecutive games before Gaya sneaked in to notch the leveller with the last kick of the game. “We fought hard and I am a…

Britain is extending an easing of cash call rules to help UK-listed companies raise vital funds during a COVID-19 induced economic slump. The Pre-Emption Group (PEG) of finance organisations, which issues guidance on rights issues and fundraisings, said on Friday it would extend the easing of its guidelines by a further two months to Nov. 30. Under normal “pre-emption” rights best practice, companies can raise up to 10% of their share capital without obtaining shareholder permission, but under eased guidelines this has been doubled to 20%. Since the measure was introduced on April 1, British companies have raised 23.7 billion…

Britain’s competition regulator on Friday launched an investigation into four of the country’s biggest housebuilders, saying they may have broken a consumer protection law in relation to leasehold homes. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it was opening enforcement cases against Barratt Developments (BDEV.L), Persimmon Homes (PSN.L), Taylor Wimpey (TW.L) and Countryside Properties (CSPC.L). The watchdog uncovered evidence of potentially unfair terms with regard to ground rents in leasehold contracts and potential mis-selling, it said. “It is unacceptable for housing developers to mislead or take advantage of homebuyers,” Andrea Coscelli, CMA’s chief executive, said in a statement. Shares of…

Pupils at special schools in England have been “forgotten about” in the rush to restart full-time education, with 20,000 children with special needs unlikely to return to school because of safety concerns, according to a study. Parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (Send) said they were concerned about sending their children back to school in September because their children were medically vulnerable or because their child’s needs mean they cannot adhere to social distancing and safe practice. Headteachers at more than 200 schools and colleges in England told researchers the government’s guidance had been unclear and showed a lack…

China’s “vulgar threats” over a visit by the Czech Republic’s senate speaker to Taiwan are like a cold, unwelcome winter wind and contrast with the courteous words the speaker offered while in Taiwan, a senior Taiwanese politician said on Thursday. China, which claims Taiwan as its sovereign territory, has condemned Czech Senate speaker Milos Vystrcil for going. The Chinese government’s top diplomat Wang Yi said this week he would pay a “heavy price” for visiting the democratic island. Vystrcil declared himself to be Taiwanese in a speech at Taiwan’s parliament on Tuesday, channelling the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s…
