The head of the European Union’s executive on Wednesday reported “genuine progress” in Brexit talks but said the risk of Britain leaving the EU without a deal on Dec. 31 remained, an outcome she said the bloc was prepared for. Britain and the EU are in a last-ditch effort to agree terms to keep trade flowing without tariffs or quotas from the start of 2021, after London’s current standstill transition out of the 27-nation bloc ends. “The next days are going to be decisive,” European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament. “The European Union is well…

The Swiss government on Wednesday allocated up to 3,500 work permits for Britons next year to let employers recruit staff from the United Kingdom, which will no longer be covered by Swiss free-movement accords with the European Union. “This ensures the required flexibility for Swiss business,” the government said. Germany’s gross domestic product grew by a record 8.5% in the third quarter as Europe’s largest economy partly recovered from an unprecedented plunge caused by the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring, the statistics office said on Tuesday. The stronger-than expected rebound was mainly driven by higher household spending and soaring exports, the office said. “This enabled the German economy to make up for a large part of the massive decline in gross domestic product caused by the coronavirus pandemic in the second quarter of 2020,” it added. The reading marked an upward revision to an earlier flash…

Burnley secured their first win of the Premier League season as Chris Wood’s eighth-minute goal was enough to earn a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Turf Moor on Monday. The result moves Burnley out of the bottom three up to 17th place, on five points from eight matches, while Palace drop to 10th on 13 after nine games. Sean Dyche’s side, who had not scored a home goal in this campaign, ended the barren run when Palace defender Cheikhou Kouyate made a mess of a high cross by Johann Berg Gudmundsson, the ball falling to Jay Rodriguez who fed…
