Rescuers flew a drone inside a tunnel in the Indian Himalayas to look for 35 construction workers believed trapped there since a surge of water and debris swept down a mountain valley destroying dams and bridges, officials said on Wednesday. Some 204 people remain unaccounted for since Sunday’s disaster in the northern state of Uttarakhand, most of them workers at the Tapovan Vishnugad hydroelectric project or at Rishiganga, a smaller dam which was swept away in the flood. So far rescuers have retrieved the bodies of 32 people from mountainsides and further downstream the Dhauliganga river, the state police said.…

Forty-four Republicans voted against proceeding with the trial against former President Donald Trump, the clearest signal yet that the Senate will ultimately acquit the president of the impeachment charge against him for a second time. Three Republican senators signaled on Tuesday that the vote is a barometer for how many senators will vote to acquit the president when the trial is over. “I’ve got to believe that it’s going to be highly unlikely that there’ll be anywhere near enough for conviction,” Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) said, according to The Hill. “It takes some mental gymnastics to on the one hand consider this to be an unconstitutional action,…

The EU is set to rebuff attempts by the Government to delay wider rules on goods entering Northern Ireland amid chaos and anger at post-Brexit delays. Michael Gove has asked Brussels to extend a grace period before full trade rules agreed when the UK left the EU are imposed, until 2023. But while Ireland has said it is open to a ‘modest’ extension, EU leaders are said to have ruled that an extension of three to six months is the most they will allow, the Telegraph reported. The Northern Ireland Protocol signed off by Boris Johnson in December avoided creating a hard border with the Republic…

Before a ball was kicked in the 2020-21 season the talk was all about whether Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool could regain their crown and start a dynasty. They were head and shoulders above all of their rivals in 2019-20, winning the league title with ease. But, torn apart by Manchester City on Sunday, nobody is throwing the word ‘dynasty’ around, not for Liverpool. Now the race is on to even make the top four. It looks like nobody will be able to derail City’s title charge now but the race for the other Champions League places is red-hot. Chelsea were marooned down in 10th but an unbeaten start…

Former President Donald Trump and his legal team are pleased with the agreement reached between Senate Republicans and Democrats on the framework for the upcoming impeachment trial, Trump’s office said in a statement. “We appreciate that Senate Republican leadership stood strong for due process and secured a structure that is consistent with past precedent,” the statement said. “This process will provide us with an opportunity to explain to Senators why it is absurd and unconstitutional to hold an impeachment trial against a private citizen.” This comes after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced that the upper chamber had reached a bipartisan deal on how the…

“What the Lord is saying is that more grace is being released” — Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. The month of February is set to be one to savor as the man of God, Reverend (Dr.) Chris Oyakhilome, declared it to be ‘the Month of Grace’ at the February Global Communion Service. Is it just the injuries? Is it just the schedule? Is it enough simply to say that, given the way they play, given the fact they have been without their three first-choice central defenders for large parts of the season, that Liverpool have been up against it and that, given more normal conditions, they will rise again? Or, after their 4-1 defeat against Manchester City on Sunday, is there something more serious going on? First, what Roy Keane would dismiss as the excuses. They have been unlucky with injuries, less in their number than in their concentration at the heart of the…

Alex Salmond has said he will not appear before MSPs on Tuesday morning after strongly criticising their investigation into a botched Scottish government inquiry into sexual harassment claims against him. The former first minister’s lawyers accused the Holyrood committee of taking an “absurd position” over Salmond’s submission to its investigation and setting “offensive” parameters on what he can say. Salmond’s lawyer, David McKie, said he would give evidence to the committee by 16 February but only if he was given written clarification on what he would be allowed to discuss without breaching legal restrictions imposed by the courts and Holyrood’s…

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said on Sunday that he was working on a bill with legislators in his state to prevent big tech companies taking action to moderate user content based on their political viewpoint. “We are working with Sen. [Bryan] Hughes on legislation to prevent social media providers like Facebook & Twitter from cancelling conservative speech,” Abbott said in a statement on Twitter. His announcement follows Florida’s move to pass legislation that would penalize social media companies that de-platform candidates during an election. The proposed law would fine companies $100,000 a day until the candidate’s access to the platform is restored. Florida will also require companies who promote…
