A New Jersey Senator has voiced concerns over a recent mask mandate order in his state that may have been driven by questionable COVID-19 testing results. Republican New Jersey Senator Michael Doherty claimed in a statement on Monday that there was a lack of government transparency regarding testing procedures which raises questions about the mask mandate order enacted on Friday by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. Doherty said the governor has refused to “answer legitimate questions about COVID-19 testing even as concerns linger that overly sensitive PCR tests are driving bad policy decisions, including the re-masking of K-12 school students.” Doherty wanted to…

Post-Brexit trade frictions have “significantly altered” freight traffic between Ireland and Britain and sparked a steep rise in volumes to and from Ireland and other European Union members, an Irish government agency report said on Thursday. The introduction of checks on some goods since neighbouring Britain left the EU’s trading orbit on Dec. 31 cut imports from Britain by 35% in the first five months of 2021 while the number of shipping routes to mainland Europe more than doubled. So-called roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) traffic between Irish and British ports was 20% lower in the second quarter compared to the same pre-coronavirus…

THE EU’s vaccine rollout has been thrown into question as the bloc has announced an investigation into the Pfizer and Moderna jabs. Announced on Wednesday, the bloc’s medical regulator will not investigate both jabs amid reports of side-effects of both shots. According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), Erythema multiforme, a form of allergic skin reaction; glomerulonephritis or kidney inflammation; and nephrotic syndrome, a renal disorder characterised by heavy urinary protein losses were all reported in association with the jabs. The bloc, however, has refused to reveal the latest number of people who have suffered these side effects in its most recent report. Neither…

LONDON, Aug 12 (Reuters) – Britain will deploy hundreds of military personnel to Afghanistan to help British nationals and local translators get out of the country, defence secretary Ben Wallace said on Thursday as the security situation there worsens. The British embassy in Kabul will be moved to a more secure location and will remain manned by only a core staff. The deployment of protection forces and logistical support has been triggered by rising violence as Taliban fighters capture cities across Afghanistan after U.S. and allied troops withdrew. “I have authorised the deployment of additional military personnel to support the…

Fittingly, it was Didier Drogba who confirmed the news that most Chelsea fans had been hoping for. “He’s coming home,” wrote the former Ivory Coast striker at the weekend in a message on social media accompanied by nine blue love hearts. Almost exactly a decade to the day since a fresh-faced teenager called Romelu Lukaku moved to Stamford Bridge for the first time for an initial £10m, the striker always tipped to follow in the footsteps of his boyhood idol is back in town after completing his transfer from Internazionale for almost 10 times that amount. It seemed inevitable that Lukaku – who…

SCOTTISH First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has demanded to see Boris Johnson face-to-face for urgent climate talks ahead of the COP26 summit in November. In a letter to the Prime Minister she said a summit of the UK’s four nations must be convened in order to “provide clear leadership” at the International meeting in Glasgow. Earlier this week, the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report, painting a stark picture of the impact of humanity on the climate due to the burning of fossil fuels and other pollutants. Pushing for a meeting, she said she wanted to work…

Talking points can arrive when you least expect them. With a minute remaining of a humdrum, lethargic extra-time that Chelsea and Villarreal could clearly have done without, Thomas Tuchel made his first bold move of the season. Kepa Arrizabalaga, a £71m player named among the substitutes for the Super Cup, stepped forward to replace Edouard Mendy. Tuchel’s strategy was to be fully justified as Kepa, at full stretch to his right, batted away Raúl Albiol’s penalty to claim the trophy for Chelsea. The scale of celebrations from the Champions League winners – and the dejection easily visible among the Villarreal contingent –…

An Ohio judge ordered a man to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of his probation or face jail time, but was rebuffed by the defendant, who said he’s not going to get the vaccine. Christopher Wagner, a Hamilton County judge, last week ordered Brandon Rutherford to get vaccinated within 60 days as a condition of his probation for possession of fentanyl, or he would face up to 18 months in prison for violating probation, WCPO reported. “I’m just a judge, not a doctor, but I think the vaccine’s a lot safer than fentanyl, which is what you had in your pocket,” said Wagner during…

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) tested the U.S. national emergency alert system on Wednesday. The test of both the Emergency Alert System and the Wireless Emergency Alert System, the second of which required people to opt-in on their cellular phones, was carried out at around 2:20 p.m. ET. Not everyone received them on their phones due to their settings. “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed,” the alert read, which was sent via text message to people’s phones. The Emergency Alert System alert was also sent to radios and TVs…
