A coroner in the United Kingdom has determined that a woman died from a side effect caused by the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. The woman was identified as 34-year-old Kim Lockwood, who had complained of a headache eight days after taking the shot in March of 2021, South Yorkshire Coroner Nicola Mundy told the BBC in a statement on March 16. The coroner said her condition quickly deteriorated, and she was pronounced dead 17 hours after being admitted to the hospital, eight days after getting the shot. Mundy said Lockwood was “extremely unlucky” in developing a “sudden and catastrophic” bleed on her brain. Her death…

“I have good memories of the Bernabéu,” Xavi Hernández had said and here was another one for the collection. “Historic,” he called it and it may have given him even more satisfaction than all those other nights as a player. His first visit as Barcelona’s coach, the man entrusted with their revival, saw a run of five consecutive clásico defeats come to a close with an astonishing 4-0 victory at their greatest rivals. An ideologue committed to his footballing faith, he always believed but it still wasn’t supposed to be this good this soon. Two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and one each…

Priti Patel’s plans to process asylum seekers abroad are facing a Conservative rebellion next week, with MPs calling the proposal “clearly ridiculous” ahead of a vote on the nationality and borders bill. Amendments circulated among senior Tories include attempts to scupper government plans to set up offshoring centres and a proposal to instead create a global resettlement scheme to accept 10,000 people a year from war-torn regions. Rebels believe they could gather the support of dozens of MPs on Tuesday, when the controversial bill returns to the Commons, after a softening in attitudes in the wake of the Ukrainian refugee crisis. They remain…

The UK would suffer a £70bn economic hit and be plunged into a recession if Europe banned Russian oil and gas imports immediately, Rishi Sunak has warned privately. Boris Johnson has been urging EU allies to follow the UK’s own planned boycott on Moscow’s oil – and potentially gas – exports, to punish its invasion of Ukraine. But The Independent has learned the chancellor fears the devastating impact on the UK economy if the EU acted now, underlining Europe’s collective reliance on Russia for its energy needs. Mr Sunak told fellow ministers at a cabinet meeting that it would swipe up to £75bn from the UK economy “straight…

This will go down as one of the greatest games in West Ham’s history. It was an occasion to rival the farewell to Upton Park and it could not have been more fitting that the decisive touch came from Andriy Yarmolenko, who was the calmest person in the London Stadium when the ball fell to him in front of goal with eight minutes of extra time left. They were all off the bench when he put the rebound away after Sevilla’s goalkeeper, Bono, pushed Pablo Fornals’ shot into his path. The noise, the sheer emotion, took the breath away. This…

The Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has become the latest footballer to have his house burgled while he was playing in a high-profile game. The French international described the five-minute break-in as “our family’s worst nightmare” and said his children were asleep in their bedrooms at the time. Pogba said he discovered he had been burgled minutes after Manchester United’s Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid at Old Trafford on Tuesday, a game in which he had appeared as a second-half substitute. He tweeted: “The burglars were in our home for less than five minutes but in that time they took from us something…
