Politicians have described Priti Patel’s plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda “evil” and “inhumane”, amid fierce criticism from refugee charities, which have said the move is ill-conceived. The government is on Thursday expected to announce multimillion-pound plans for asylum seekers who cross the Channel in small boats to be flown for processing to Rwanda. Ian Blackford, the Scottish National party’s Westminster leader, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “It’s just chilling, absolutely chilling, to think that people who are coming here for a whole host of reasons – vulnerable people – are going to be taken all the way to Africa to…

It was fraught, it was suffocating, it was full-blooded – entirely as billed – and it blew up in the 89th minute with a mass melee between the players of both Atlético Madrid and Manchester City, including plenty of substitutes. The spark had come when the Atlético defender Felipe, already on a booking for having cleaned out Phil Foden in the early going, slid into him by the sideline before seeming to kick him. With Foden down, all hell broke loose, another Atlético defender, Stefan Savic, trying to lift him to his feet and being shooed away by Oleksandr Zinchenko, who…

Furious Rishi Sunak has blamed Boris and Carrie Johnson for his Partygate fine and had to be talked out of quitting as Chancellor last night – relenting only because it would have taken down the Prime Minister as well. Mr Sunak paid a £50 fine and apologised yesterday after police ruled he broke the law by attending a surprise birthday party in June 2020. The event was organised by Mrs Johnson to mark the PM’s 56th birthday and the Chancellor is said to only have been present briefly as he made his way to a meeting in the building. Tesco doubled pre-tax profits to more than £2bn last year but has warned on profits for this year as it faces a battle to “keep the cost of the weekly shop in check” amid soaring inflation driving up costs and squeezing household budgets. Total revenues for the UK’s biggest supermarket, which proved to be a pandemic winner by taking a share from rivals and boosting online sales, rose by 6% to £61.3bn as pre-tax profits jumped from £1.1bn to £2.2bn in the year to the end of 26 February. However, the company warned of “significant uncertainties” weighing on the business,…

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson issued a full apology but refused to resign after being fined for attending a June 19 party at Downing Street party during the height of the pandemic. Johnson denied any wrongdoing and claimed that at the time he was not aware that he broke his government’s rules. The event was a surprise birthday party for the Prime Minister. It was not immediately clear how much Johnson’s fine was but it made him the first British leader to be sanctioned for breaking the law while in office. When asked if he would resign he said that he paid…

More than 35 homebuilders have agreed to put £2bn towards fixing unsafe cladding on high-rise buildings in England identified in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower disaster, Michael Gove, the housing secretary, has said. The move had been expected after Gove asked 53 homebuilders to contribute towards fixing buildings they have had a role in developing. More than 35 said they would commit £2bn, but that still leaves a further £3bn needed to address fire safety problems in high-rise buildings across the country. Gove said the further £3bn would be raised by an extension to the building safety levy, forcing industry to…

We do not know yet when this will be.” The detention of the vessel comes as P&O planned to resume cross-Channel services…

It was a Champions League mission that was supposed to be impossible for Chelsea. And yet it was one that they thought they had pulled off. They refused to wallow when, two goals to the good thanks to Mason Mount and Antonio Rüdiger, they were cruelly denied by a VAR overrule after Marcos Alonso thought he had made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute. Instead, Timo Werner did make it 3-0. For so many reasons, it had to be the cult hero and, if the travelling fans struggled to make sense of it all – utterly lost in the moment – they…

GPs must work longer to help accident and emergency units that are becoming overwhelmed with patients, according to NHS guidance. The instruction comes from new orders which direct every area to provide ‘extended hours’ at practices. Any appointments lost to the Easter four-day weekend are to be rescheduled within a fortnight, the guidance said. Social care services were told to do ‘everything you can’ to get patients out of hospital even if that means spreading care more thinly, according to leaked correspondence seen by The Daily Telegraph. The increased pressure has largely been sparked by a rising number of Covid cases. Infection…

Petrol bosses taking advantage of high fuel prices are making £30million in a day. People campaigning for fuel prices to decrease said the cost of filling up a car could have decreased by 20p per litre. However, fuel chiefs are raking in up to 29p per litre in profit on petrol alone, according to The Sun. Statistics showed bosses are making even more – 35.7p per litre – on diesel. FairFuelUK’s Howard Cox said: ‘Prices at the pumps should now be 15p to 20p less, due to oil costs falling by 30 per cent in March plus a welcome 6p cut in…
