The UK’s biggest food bank network is preparing to spend millions of pounds topping up charity food parcels this winter as it offers help to record numbers of families at risk of going hungry as a result of the cost of living crisis. The Trussell Trust said the expenditure was needed to ensure food banks had adequate food reserves because its customary main source of food supplies – donations from the public – was failing to keep pace with rapidly increasing demand. The trust said it expected 1.3m emergency food parcels would be distributed by its members over the next six months…
Leaders of the 27 European Union countries meet for the second time in a fortnight to try to bring down energy prices, though persistent divisions between them mean the bloc is unlikely for now put a ceiling on what it pays for gas. The 27 are expected to back an alternative price benchmark for liquefied natural gas and joint gas buying, after earlier agreeing to cut consumption and introduce levies on windfall profits in the energy industry. But they remain as split as they were months ago on whether and how to cap gas prices to stem high inflation and…
Tesla Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk said he expected the electric carmaker to have a “great” Q4 even though the company would probably miss its vehicle delivery targets this year. The billionaire told analysts on a conference call there was excellent demand for the fourth quarter, addressing investor concern that buyers could be discouraged by the weak global economy and high prices for Tesla vehicles. Tesla is expanding fast despite global economic jitters, and investors are closely watching for signs that the cooling economy would hurt demand. Musk, the chief executive of Tesla, was answering a question during a call…
A rail line across northern England will be closed for several days after a freight train derailed. Network Rail said carriages carrying cement came off the track near Carlisle, Cumbria, shortly after 8pm on Wednesday. This has blocked the route between Carlisle and Newcastle in both directions, affecting the train operator, Northern. The incident where the railway crosses the River Petteril is likely to have caused “significant damage” to the railway bridge, track and lineside equipment, according to Network Rail. The infrastructure management company added: “The route is expected to be entirely closed to all trains for several days.” Inspectors from the…
When Bruno Fernandes curled in Manchester United’s second goal on 69 minutes a seated Erik ten Hag raised his arms in delight. The strike directly followed Harry Kane missing a gilded opportunity to equalise when smashing against David de Gea from close range. From this the hosts raced 80 yards upfield with Antony and the excellent Fred involved before United’s talisman bent a supreme finish past Hugo Lloris for only a second of the season. Ten Hag had spoken of how more goals would come for Fernandes and provide all that has been missing from the Portuguese. In line with…
Wolves’ search for a new manager may soon border on the panic-stricken after Julen Lopetegui turned them down and then a possible emotional return for Nuno Espírito Santo also fell by the wayside. Whoever succeeds Bruno Lage on a long-term basis requires quick solutions within a squad that has lost its previous defensive solidity and shipped cheap goals while scoring five all season. Crystal Palace, with Michael Olise excellent, Eberechi Eze getting their equaliser and Wilfried Zaha the winner, showed the value of speedy, inventive attackers. “With the quality we’ve got we’ll always score goals,” as Eze put it. Wolves…
London stocks were steady in early trade on Wednesday, as data showed that UK inflation hit double digits again in September. At 0830 BST, the FTSE 100 was flat at 6,938.12, while the pound was 0.5% lower versus the dollar at 1.1268 after figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that higher food prices helped push up inflation to a record 10.1% last month. The consumer price index rose by 10.1% in the 12 months to September, a 40 year high, compared to August’s rate of 9.9%. The figure was largely in line with expectations. On a monthly basis,…
Higher food prices helped push up inflation to 10.1% in September, official data showed on Wednesday. According to the Office for National Statistics, the consumer price index rose by 10.1% in the 12 months to September, compared to August’s rate of 9.9%. The figure was largely in line with expectations. On a monthly basis, CPI rose by 0.5% in September, compared to 0.3% in September 2021. Including owner occupiers’ housing costs, annual CPIH rose by 8.8%, from 8.6% in August. On a monthly basis it rose 0.4%, compared to 0.3% in September 2021. The ONS said that rising food prices…
Officials in Denmark said Tuesday that “powerful explosions” caused damage to the Nord Stream pipelines under the Baltic Sea. The Russian-constructed Nord Stream system had carried billions of cubic feet of natural gas from Russia to Germany before it was damaged late last month. No nation or group has claimed responsibility for the incident, and the United States has not issued a public statement on who may have been behind it. In a translated statement, the Danish Police Intelligence Services confirmed that “extensive damage” to the pipelines was caused by “powerful explosions.” However, the police agency did not assign blame for the explosions. “It is not possible…
A damning report into the deaths of newborn babies at an NHS Trust is due to be published today. The report has been chaired by Dr Bill Kirkup who also led the investigation in 2015 into deaths of mothers and babies at the Morecambe Bay NHS Trust. The investigation into maternity services at East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust has examined more than 200 cases of poor care dating back to 2009. It is expected to find that babies died unnecessarily and the Trust failed to learn from failures in care over many years. The report was commissioned in 2020…
