Novak Djokovic says there are no hard feelings on his return to Australia, but can’t guarantee he will ever completely move past the saga that torpedoed his 2022 Australian Open hopes and thrust him into the centre of a media frenzy. Djokovic was deported from Australia almost 12 months ago after arriving unvaccinated against Covid at a time when the country was still subject to strict biosecurity regulations. Such regulations have now been lifted and in November the Australian government overturned the three-year ban that came with Djokovic’s deportation and granted him a visa to return for the summer of tennis. The…

Pep Guardiola believes Erling Haaland will only get better after being able to build his fitness during the World Cup break. Haaland struck his 19th and 20th of the season to help beat Leeds 3-1 in only his 14th Premier League appearance for the club. The Norwegian arrived in the summer from Borussia Dortmund where he missed large portions of last season through injury. Due to Norway’s absence from Qatar 2022, Haaland avoided the mental and physical stress of tournament football. “I think he is still not at his best because of the injury, to move his huge body is not easy for him but…

The government has so far recouped only £18m from potentially fraudulent personal protective equipment (PPE) contracts. Health minister Will Quince, responding to a written parliamentary question from Liberal Democrat MP Daisy Cooper, confirmed that as of 12 December the Department of Health had recovered £18m from PPE contracts deemed “high risk”. The figures, first reported by The Guardian, revealed the government’s “pitiful” efforts to reclaim wasted money, the Liberal Democrats said. The newspaper said it is estimated up to £630m spent on PPE could have involved fraud or error. Mr Quince told the party’s health spokesperson the money was clawed back “through…

Twitter appeared to succumb to pressure from federal officials to moderate content around COVID-19, including blocking a post by a former Harvard scientist who offered critical feedback against COVID-19 vaccines in 2021, according to the latest installment of the Elon Musk-endorsed “Twitter Files” posted on the morning of Dec. 26. Internal emails published by journalist David Zweig show that there were “countless instances” of Twitter posts being taken down or labeled as “misleading” because they differed from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines or “establishment views” around COVID-19 or vaccines. In one instance, according to internal emails, a Twitter…

Tennis star Novak Djokovic arrived in Adelaide, South Australia, on the evening of Dec. 27, returning nearly a year after he was deported from the country. The 35-year-old Serbian tennis player was deported on Jan. 16 from Melbourne to Dubai after the federal court exercised the former immigration minister’s decision to cancel Djokovic’s high-profile visa over his vaccination status. Djokovic’s deportation had meant he was denied re-entry into the country for three years. But since July 2022, the Australian government has overturned all its COVID-related restrictions and requirements in Australia. Now overseas visitors no longer have to show proof of an approved…

Manchester United were faster, sharper, smarter, and classier than Nottingham Forest in this seventh straight win over their visitors. This was approaching the complete performance: a blend of measured attacking and rapid breaks and the constant harrying of an opponent who ended exhausted and demoralised. Given United had scored only 20 Premier League goals at kickoff and there is limited finance in January to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, a strike apiece from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial before Fred’s late clincher was as fine a tonic as the three points which keep them on the heels of Tottenham. Freedom is one more word to describe…
