The UK is experiencing the sharpest, fastest rise in interest rates since the 1980s, and markets and homeowners are braced for another increase from the Bank of England on Thursday, with an increase of at least 0.25 percentage points from 4.5% expected. After more than a decade of rates at 0.75% or below, this has left many homeowners whose fixed deals are ending, and those on tracker mortgages, facing huge blows to their finances. Many of the people who have got in touch with the Guardian are young couples and families, who are often worse affected than older homeowners by the interest rate…

Noreika will be presiding over the case against Hunter Biden, who after a five-year criminal investigation was on Tuesday charged with federal crimes. The president’s son has been charged with two counts of failure to pay income tax and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm. He…

Former President Donald Trump and other Republicans on June 20 denounced the criminal plea deal that federal authorities reached with President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. An attorney representing Hunter Biden said his client was taking responsibility for offenses that occurred while he struggled with drug addiction. Trump and others decried the agreement for letting Hunter Biden off easy. In a post on his Truth Social platform on June 20, Trump said the Department of Justice gave the president’s son a free pass. “Wow! The corrupt Biden DOJ just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by giving Hunter Biden…
The search for a submersible that went missing during a dive to the wreck of Titanic has entered its fourth day, amid concerns the oxygen supply sustaining its five passengers is running dangerously low. A New Zealand high school maths teacher has had his teaching license cancelled for refusing to call his Year 10 student by her preferred name and pronouns. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case that will decide whether the United States government can be sued for monetary damages. The high court agreed on June 20 to review an appeals court ruling that Reginald Kirtz could sue the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for wrongly stating on his credit report that some of his loans were overdue, damaging his credit score. At issue is whether Congress waived the United States’ sovereign immunity from lawsuits when it modified consumer protection laws nearly 30 years ago. Kirtz sued the USDA in 2020, alleging that the agency violated the Fair…
