Finland’s prime minister, Sanna Marin, has lost her battle to stay in power after her centre-left Social Democratic party (SDP) was narrowly beaten into third place in a cliffhanger election by its conservative and far-right rivals. With all of the votes counted on Sunday, the right-wing National Coalition party (NCP) won 20.8% of the vote, with the populist, nation-first Finns party scoring 20.1%. Marin’s SDP took 19.9% of the vote. Voter turnout was 71.9%. Marin congratulated the election winners during her concession speech, but hailed an improvement in both her party’s vote share and its projected number of MPs. “It’s a…
The NSPCC and experts on grooming gangs have warned ministers against framing the issue as one based around ethnicity, warning this could hamper efforts to tackle a crime that a Home Office report said was carried out predominantly by white men. One expert said Suella Braverman, who has argued that grooming gangs are “almost all” made up of British Pakistani men, appeared more focused on presenting “hard-right talking points” than tackling the wider issues over child sexual abuse. Braverman, the home secretary, and Rishi Sunak are to announce new efforts to tackle grooming gangs on Monday, with the prime minister due to say that “political…
Former President Donald Trump will hold a speech on Tuesday night at his Mar-a-Lago resort, a senior 2024 campaign adviser confirmed on Sunday morning. Trump adviser Jason Miller confirmed to Newsmax on Sunday he would deliver the speech at his Florida residence after he is arraigned by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg following a grand jury indictment last week. “Trump is going to be giving a speech on Tuesday night at Mar-a-Lago 8:15 p.m. I think the entire world will be watching just how strong and just how fervent he is, that we must continue this Make America Great Again movement, because…
Parents in England face another wave of strikes and school closures after teachers belonging to the National Education Union decisively rejected the government’s pay offer. NEU members voted by 98% not to accept the offer of a £1,000 one-off payment and a 4.3% pay rise for most teachers from September, triggering two further days of strikes in England on Thursday 27 April and Tuesday 2 May. More than 195,000 members voted in the pay ballot, with only 2% voting to accept. The rejection of the government’s offer, which is likely to be followed by the other major teaching unions, is a setback…
Chelsea’s season has descended into chaos after they fired Graham Potter and began looking for their third manager since being bought by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital last summer. Julian Nagelsmann is prominent in Chelsea’s thoughts after the ruthless dismissal of Potter, who was informed of his fate at 2.45pm on Sunday, but the former Bayern Munich manager is believed to be reluctant to take the job until the summer. A full-time appointment is not imminent. Chelsea have installed Bruno Saltor, who was part of Potter’s backroom staff, as interim head coach and want to think carefully before making their…
Elon Musk is making plans to visit China as early as next month, according to reports, amid delays to plans to more than double production capacity at Tesla’s plant in Shanghai. The electric vehicle maker’s chief executive is also seeking a meeting with China’s Premier Li Qiang as he aims to shore up support in his company’s second largest market. It would be Mr Musk’s first visit to China since the pandemic. He last visited China in early 2020, when he set the internet abuzz by dancing on stage during an event at the Shanghai factory. It comes as Tesla…
An independent review of sex education is set to be ordered by the Prime Minister, amid growing frustration with the Education Secretary. The Government is scrambling to respond to mounting alarm among parents over the teaching of sex and gender in schools. Rishi Sunak is now preparing to announce as soon as Friday that an independent panel of experts will lead a review of sex education lessons, taking over work already started by the Department for Education (DfE), The Telegraph understands. The Prime Minister ordered the DfE to bring forward the review earlier this month after he was presented with a dossier…
House prices fell by 3.1% year-on-year in March, marking the biggest annual decline since July 2009, Nationwide Building Society said. The figures also showed a monthly price fall of 0.8% – the seventh consecutive fall – which leaves prices 4.6% below their August peak. The average UK house price in March was £257,122. Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s chief economist, said: “The housing market reached a turning point last year as a result of the financial market turbulence which followed the mini-budget. “Since then, activity has remained subdued – the number of mortgages approved for house purchase remained weak at 43,500 cases…
Former President Donald Trump is set to be arraigned sometime “early next week” after a Manhattan grand jury voted for his indictment, Trump’s attorney Joseph Tacopina said on Thursday. “We’re working that out—maybe Tuesday, but early this week,” Tacopina, who has represented high-profile clients such as Michael Jackson and rapper Jay-Z, told The Epoch Times in an interview late Thursday. A grand jury on Thursday voted for Trump’s indictment, Tacopina confirmed with The Epoch Times. That makes Trump the first former president to face criminal charges in the history of the United States. The indictment against Trump was a major development in…
Mason Mount is interested in joining Bayern Munich and reuniting with Thomas Tuchel after the former Chelsea manager was appointed by the German club last week. Mount’s contract expires at the end of next season and the uncertainty over his future could lead to him being sold this summer. Chelsea do not want to find themselves at risk of losing the midfielder on a free transfer and could be forced to cash in if there is no sign of a turnaround in negotiations over a new deal. Liverpool, who are rated as favourites to sign Mount, and Manchester United are monitoring the situation closely.…
