House prices fell 0.5% in February, compared with a month earlier, the sixth month in a row that they have declined on the building society’s regular survey. The slide saw the average price of a home fall to £257,406, almost £900 lower than a…

The BBC has been accused of disinviting a gay group from a programme because it refused to attack Kate Forbes, the under-fire Scottish National Party (SNP) leadership hopeful. The LGB Alliance (LGBA) was approached on Friday by BBC One’s Sunday Morning Live to debate whether “traditional Christian views are incompatible with modern politics” on a studio panel, in the context of Ms Forbes’s views on same-sex marriage. When a producer canvassed its opinion, the group of lesbian, gay and bisexual people said it “completely reject[ed] her views” but insisted “we have freedom of religion” and that religious beliefs are protected under the 2010 Equality Act.…

The World Cup foes Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé inspired Paris Saint-Germain to secure a 3-0 win at bitter rivals Marseille to extend their Ligue 1 lead to eight points on Sunday. Mbappé, who scored twice, was set up by Messi for both his goals and repaid the favour by laying on another for the Argentina forward as PSG, who were without the injured Neymar, moved to 60 points from 25 games with the second-placed Marseille on 52. Mbappé, the France forward who was on the losing side against Messi’s Argentina in the World Cup final, became PSG’s joint record scorer with 200 goals – level…

Kate Forbes is voters’ preferred choice as Scottish first minister, according to a new poll that comes as pressure builds on Humza Yousaf to provide full disclosure about missing a vote on same-sex marriage. The Panelbase survey for The Sunday Times puts the finance secretary in pole position despite a dreadful start to her leadership bid, dominated by criticism of her views as a Free Church member on gay marriage and sex outside of wedlock. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed (23 per cent) would like Forbes to succeed Nicola Sturgeon, who announced her resignation this month, while 15 per…

Nigeria was to resume announcing presidential election results on Monday amid complaints of irregularities as opposition parties criticised the slow pace at which the results were being uploaded on to the election commission’s website. Saturday’s vote to pick a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to be close, with candidates from two parties that have alternated in power since the end of army rule in 1999 facing an unusually strong challenge from a minor party nominee. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has so far released official results from only one of 36 states. To become president, a candidate…

On Feb. 26, White House National security adviser Jake Sullivan said there’s “no definitive answer” to whether the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic can be traced to a lab leak in China. During an interview on the CNN Sunday talk show “State of the Union,” Sullivan addressed a Wall Street Journal report stating the Energy Department had joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in its assessment that COVID-19 likely escaped a Wuhan lab in 2019 due to a research accident. “Here’s what I can tell you. President Biden has directed, repeatedly, every element of our intelligence community to put effort and resources behind getting to the bottom of…

A price cap on the amount suppliers can charge for energy will fall by £999 to £3,280 from April, but bills will still rise due to a planned cut in government support. The energy regulator, Ofgem, said on Monday that its quarterly cap on household bills for average dual-fuel direct-debit customers will fall by 23% for the three months from 1 April, from £4,279 for the January to March quarter. Consumers will not actually pay this figure as the government’s energy price guarantee and its £400 discount scheme subsidise household bills, keeping the price for a typical household at £2,100…

There are differing definitions of a trophy drought at these two clubs. It felt like a long time ago that Manchester United were winning this competition and the Europa League under José Mourinho. It was 2017 and the barren years since then had added up to their longest sequence without silverware since the early 1980s. Newcastle, of course, could see that and reraise it to 54 years – the chasm to their famous Fairs Cup triumph. This final, Newcastle’s first since the FA Cup of 1999 when they took on the same opponents, was all about who could chart fresh…
