NHS maternity staff will take part in a mandatory training programme to improve patient safety after a damning report by the health regulator said that poor care and harm in childbirth was in danger of becoming “normalised”. NHS TO SCREEN 100,000 NEWBORN BABIES FOR GENETIC CONDITIONS – 500 blood samples from 13 NHS hospitals already taken from newborn babies The National Health Service (NHS) is set to screen 100,000 newborn babies for over 200 genetic conditions. The initiative is described as a “world first” scheme to help early diagnosis of genetic diseases.  Blood samples from 500 newborn babies have reportedly already been collected from 13 NHS hospitals.
