NATO is reportedly planning to open a liaison office in Tokyo, the first in the Asia-Pacific region, as it moves to deepen ties with Asia-Pacific nations amid increasing concerns over the threat of China’s communist regime. Nikkei Asia reported that the regional office would allow the military alliance to conduct consultations with its key Asia-Pacific partners (AP4)—Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea—and act as a point of contact with other nations in the region. The proposed plan is to open a one-person office in Tokyo next year. However, negotiations about whether the office will be provided by Japan or funded…
VOTING UNDER WAY IN LOCAL ELECTIONS Voter ID Required for the first time Voters in parts of England are heading to the polls to cast their ballots for councillors and mayors in this year’s local elections. On 70 minutes the inevitable occurred: Erling Haaland stampeded forward, took Jack Grealish’s delivery and, with Lukasz Fabianski advancing, the goalscoring phenomenon feathered a spiralling lob over West Ham’s goalkeeper for a record Premier League goal No 35. It eclipsed the tallies of Alan Shearer and Andy Cole and, more vitally, doubled Manchester City’s lead against a doughty West Ham and by the final whistle it was 3-0: Pep Guardiola’s blue machine were on top again with five matches remaining in the quest to emulate Manchester United and claim a hat-trick of titles. A corner was the result, again from the left.…

A man was arrested outside Buckingham Palace on Tuesday after allegedly throwing items – suspected to be shotgun cartridges – into the palace grounds. Officers detained the man at about 7pm after he approached the gates of the palace in central London. He was held on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon after he was searched and a knife was found, but he was not carrying a gun, the Metropolitan police said. Cordons were put in place after the man was also found to be in possession of a suspicious bag, the force added. Roads have now reopened and…
Sam Allardyce has been confirmed as the Leeds manager for the remaining four games of the season, replacing Javi Gracia, who has been sacked after less than three months. A heavily incentivised deal could earn the 68-year-old £3m if he guides the team clear of relegation. Allardyce – who previously worked with the Leeds chief executive, Angus Kinnear, at West Ham – arrives with the club out of the relegation zone on goal difference and facing tough fixtures comprising trips to Manchester City and West Ham and home matches against Newcastle and Tottenham. Leeds have taken one point from their…
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has launched a rapid investigation after more than 30 of its own staff members tested positive for COVID-19 following a conference in Atlanta, Georgia. A spokesperson for the CDC confirmed to The Hill that the 2023 Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) conference began on April 24 in Atlanta, where the agency is headquartered. The annual conference, which was previously canceled amid the pandemic, serves as a chance for EIS officers to “share their work in leading-edge investigations, scientific findings, and forward-thinking strategies to inform improvements in public health—all while gaining valuable presentation experience,” according to the CDC’s…
“It’s not over,” Mikel Arteta had said on Monday. It feels as if it is, Manchester City just too powerful, as evidenced by their 4-1 dismissal of Arsenal last Wednesday. But Arsenal cannot allow their Premier League title push to fizzle out. They owe it to themselves after the excellent season they have produced. And then who knows? Just maybe … Arteta’s men kept up their side of the bargain, moving back to the top of the table, two points clear of City, having played two matches more, although to have failed to beat this Chelsea team would have been an abdication. Frank Lampard’s…
King Charles’s coronation is a “chance to showcase our liberty”, a cabinet minister, has said, after the UK government fast-tracked legislation to crack down on protests. The security minister, Tom Tugendhat, defended the new laws, which include a 12-month prison sentence for protesters who block roads and a six-month prison sentence or unlimited fine for anyone who locks on to others, objects or buildings. Police will also be able to stop and search protesters they suspect are setting out to cause “disruption”. Official warning letters have been sent to anti-monarchists planning to stage peaceful protests at the coronation, but the cabinet…
HIGHER INTEREST RATES HELP HSBC TRIPLE PROFITS – HSBC Resume Quarterly Dividends as Pre-tax profits came in at $12.9bn HSBC has reported a trebling of first quarter profits, aided by higher interest rates. Europe’s largest bank, which is based in the UK, said its performance meant it was able to pay its first quarterly dividend since 2019. Pre-tax profits came in at $12.9bn (£10.3bn) between January and March compared to $4.2bn (£3.4bn) in the same period last year. The figure smashed financial market expectations of a sum closer to $8.7bn ($7bn). Revenue rose 64% to just over $20bn ($16bn) as…
