Tottenham have made a massive new contract offer to Harry Kane that would significantly improve his £200,000-a-week terms. But the club’s talisman has no immediate intention to sign it and will certainly not do so while the transfer window remains open. Kane, who celebrates his 30th birthday on 28 July, has entered the final 12 months of his six-year Spurs deal and is coveted by a host of leading clubs, including Bayern Munich, who last week bid an initial €70m. Thomas Tuchel, the Bayern manager, is pushing hard for Kane. Spurs’ position is that Kane is not for sale. The chairman, Daniel Levy,…
A High Street bank has blocked a gender-critical parents group from opening a new account amid a row over its political views. Metro Bank refused to open a new business account for Our Duty, a group of more than 2,000 parents who believe that it is harmful for transgender children to undergo a medical transition. The group’s founder, Keith Jordan, claimed that a manager told the group it could not open a business account because “the content of your website conflicts with the culture and ideas we are pushing”. The not-for-profit group’s website says it supports parents who believe children…
A federal judge has made a historic ruling by partially granting an injunction that blocks various Biden administration officials and government agencies such as the Justice Department and the FBI from working with big tech firms to censor posts on social media. The injunction came in response to a censorship-by-proxy lawsuit brought by attorneys general in Louisiana and Missouri, who have accused Biden administration officials and various government agencies of pressuring social media companies to suspend accounts or take down posts. Judge Terry A. Doughty of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana wrote in the July 4…
Cambodia has barred Meta’s Oversight Board members from entering the country after the board called for the suspension of Prime Minister Hun Sen’s Facebook account for inciting violence in a speech video. Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation designated 22 people as “persona non grata” and ordered them to leave the country within 48 hours of the statement’s release on Tuesday. The ministry accused the board of interfering in Cambodia’s internal affairs due to their recommendation to suspend Hun Sen’s Facebook account, calling the board’s decision “political in nature.” “It intends to obstruct the freedom of the press for the…
Arsenal have finalised terms over their £105m deal for West Ham’s Declan Rice, with the guaranteed portion of the fee expected to be paid in three instalments over 24 months. West Ham are selling the midfielder for £100m plus £5m in add-ons and the transfer is on the verge of completion. Arsenal wanted to spread the cost of the guaranteed payment over five years but have been forced to bring the number of instalments down in order to secure Mikel Arteta’s top summer target. Rice is expected to undergo a medical and join Arsenal this week. Keeping the payment structure on a…

A legal challenge to plans to expand London’s ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) to the whole of the capital will be heard in the high court on Tuesday as five Conservative-led councils seek to block the proposals. The Ulez is due to expand at the end of August from the boundary of the north and south circular roads to throughout Greater London, requiring drivers of the most polluting vehicles to pay a fee when using them in the area. Four outer London boroughs – Bexley, Bromley, Harrow and Hillingdon – and Surrey county council launched legal action in February this year arguing that…
UK bank bosses have been summoned to a meeting with the financial watchdog this week amid mounting concerns that they are profiting from rising interest rates by offering paltry savings rates to customers. Executives from the big high street names Lloyds Banking Group, NatWest, HSBC and Barclays, as well as from smaller lenders, are due to attend a meeting at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) on Thursday to discuss concerns that savings rates are lagging far behind the soaring costs of mortgages and loans. The Bank of England has raised its base rate to 5% and further increases are expected. The move has pushed…
Australians have narrowly avoided a new round of interest rate hikes after the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) decided to keep the official cash rate unchanged in July. In its latest board meeting, the RBA announced that it would maintain the current official cash rate of 4.1 percent throughout July. The central bank said the brief reprieve would provide it some time to assess the impact of the recent interest rate increases and the economic outlook. “Interest rates have been increased by four percentage points since May last year. The higher interest rates are working to establish a more sustainable balance…
U.S. health officials will start formally tracking infections caused by the rare but potentially deadly germ that sickened babies and triggered a nationwide shortage of infant formula last year. A group that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) agreed on June 29 to add infections caused by cronobacter to the list of serious conditions reported to the agency. There are about 120 infections and diseases on the national watchlist. States will be asked, but not required, to notify the CDC about cronobacter infections, although they usually comply. Such infections are required to be reported now in only…
