ISRAEL BANS UNRWA FROM OPERATING IN THE COUNTRY- Lawmaker Sharren Haskel says a terrorist organisation has taken over UNRWA
Israel has banned the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA from operating in the country, passing a law into enactment on Monday to this effect.
The lawmakers who drafted the law cited the involvement of several UNRWA members of staff in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel and for staffers having membership in Hamas and other armed groups.
Israel has called repeatedly for UNRWA to be disbanded, with its responsibilities transferred to other U.N. agencies.
The U.N. said in August that nine UNRWA staff may have been involved in the Oct. 7 assault and had been fired. A Hamas commander in Lebanon – killed last month in an Israeli strike – was found to have had a UNRWA job and another commander killed in Gaza last week doubled as an aid worker.
Israeli Lawmaker Boaz Bismuth, said UNRWA’s work there has been counterproductive for years.
Another Israeli lawmaker Sharren Haskel says UNRWA is an organisation that a terrorist organisation has completely taken over, further stating that Israel would take measures to ensure their people remain unharmed by terrorism and terrorist activities.
