Dutch duo Virgil van Dijk and Vivianne Miedema won the top honours at the PFA player of the year awards on Sunday (April 28).
Liverpool defender Van Dijk was the first defender to win the men’s PFA player of the year award since John Terry in 2005, while Arsenal’s Miedema took the prize after a stunning title-winning season where she averaged more than a goal per game.
Van Dijk beat off tough competition from the likes of Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard, Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and teammate Sadio Mane.
Miedema also finished ahead of a trio of Manchester City finalists in her category – Nikita Parris, Keira Walsh and Steph Houghton, as well as Chelsea duo Erin Cuthbert and Ji So-Yun.Both the ‘Young Player of the Year’ awards went to Manchester City starlets. The men’s award going to City forward Raheem Sterling and the women’s award going to City’s Georgia Stanway.
